As
you probably noticed, life is dynamic. It's
constantly changing, growing, evolving, brining in the
new, releasing the obsolete.
In
contrast an idol is dead, fixed, static,
unmoving. Change is its arch
enemy. Ultra-conservative, fundamentalist
Christianity is the embodiment
of the dead, the fixed, the static, the
unmoving. With the notable exception of the Roman
Catholic hierarchy declaring its leader to be
infallible, there's not been a single major change in
the basic, Christian belief structure that is more recent than
when the church acknowledged that the Earth was not flat.
And they
fought that change by murdering the man who revealed
that the Earth was round°
and revolved around the
sun. You've probably heard maxim:
"What isn't growing is busy
dying." Well, which picture fits
ultra-conservative Christianity?
Any
Port In a Storm:
But
then, why are so many Americans presently turning to
fundamentalist Christianity? Three major
things happen in times of chaos and
stress. Some people get desperate.
Some people get religious. Others get
violent. All to many get all
three.
Are
people turning to a religion because they have
examined its teaching and found it to be an accurate
representation of the truth? Or could
there be some other factors behind this shift --
factors like masterful marketing, political
manipulation,°
and personal desperation in the face of crisis and
confusion. Could it be that the voices of
ultra-conservative Christianity are so loud and so
frequently heard that they are drowning out most of
the voices that offer any other possibilities?
Major
Changes are Coming Soon:
You've
probably also noticed that we are presently
(2006) in the early stages of major political,
economic, social, religious, and environmental
changes. These changes will almost
certainly peak within the next ten years.
At the other side of these changes, human life, for
those of us who survive the changes, will be
drastically different from what it is today, and very
likely, billions of people will no longer be around to
experience the outcome.
Most
people are smart enough to know that: 1)
major changes are inevitable, 2) these
changes are coming very soon, and 3)
their lives are going to be altered beyond what they
can cope with by themselves. Most people
are desperately in need of somewhere to turn for help.
How
are people responding?
And
to what or where are they turning?"
Many gullible Christians who mindlessly believe
whatever their leaders tell them have bought the
religiously inspired fairytale called "The
Rapture." As a result, they sit
back and wait, either doing nothing or encouraging the
chaos because they believe the end of the world is
coming very soon. Their mindset is:
"There's no sense in being concerned about war,
or about the destruction of the Earthly
environment. Destruction is all part of
God's plan." Unfortunately for all of us they're
in for a big shock and a rude awakening.°
